OVIEDO
Oviedo is the capital city of the Principality of Asturias, and obviously it's most important city. In Oviedo live 225,089 people. It's located in the center of Asturias
NAME
Oviedo lends it's name to the sudarium of Oviedo. It's said that it's a piece of cloth that covered the head of Jesus in the moment he died. Then it was stolen from his tomb and brought to Asturias in 856 AD.
HISTORY
Oviedo was founded by two monks which build up a church to Saint Vicent. Later on they chose Oviedo as capital because it was in the middle of the Visigothic Kingdom. IN the year 842 the court was moved there.
DEMONYM
People from Oviedo are called "ovetenses". But coloquially, they are called "carbayones" because in the middle of the Uria street there was an enormous oak tree. In asturian languaje oaks are called "carbayus" so "carbayu" moved to"carbayon".
IMPORTANT PLACES
In the year 1918 the government decided to change it's name to "Street of France" but the whole city joined and they could continue with the old name. When it was built, the "Carbayon" was removed, but they have an honour plaque where the tree was.

In oviedo there are very famous sculptors, for example:

It's a church build up in the Narnco mount. Many centuries ago it was used as the private house of the King Ramiro I. Now it's used as a monument

Cathedral of Oviedo:
The cathedral is the biggest religious building of Asturias. The king Fruela I decided to build it up but it took three centuries to finish it. Now it doesn't hold religious events regularly. It's declared world heritage site and many torisits visit it everyday.

Campoamor theater:
It's a very famous theater built in the year 1892. It helds mnay plays and operas every month. But the main event it helds are the Prince of Asturias Awards. This prizes are given to scientists, doctors, writters, sportsmanand cooperation.Last year Saskia Sassen (a dutch sociologyst) won the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences

Uria Street:
It's the most important street of Oviedo. It was built to join the centre with the North train Station.

Mauro Álvarez Fernandez
He was born in Oviedo and he loved sculpure since he was a toddler. He made figures with clay when he was only 8. He made "La regenta ". She is a character from a book which criticized the bourgeoisie of that time. She was very famous culturally.

THINGS TO DO IN ASTURIAS
WHAT YOU MUST DO IN ASTURIAS
You must visit
Gijón and have an ice-cream while you walk along San Lorenzo Beach .
You must bike on Gijon ,
because it has lots of bike-lines (you have to wear a helmet, it’s compulsory).
And what about
watching a football match?
You should go to the Molinón Stadium and support
Real Sporting de Gijón.
You must visit
Oviedo , the Capital City . You should have a glass of Cider with Tapas in the City Center . You should visit the Cathedral and the Campoamor, the best theatre in Asturias . You don’t have to watch a
Real Oviedo match (because they are awful)
You must go
down kayaking the River Sella.

Flora and fauna
The fauna in Asturias is variety due to its great diversity
of territories ranging from High
Mountain , different types
of forests, valleys or areas of dunes or beaches.
The most common animals
in Asturian forests are: the fox, the bear, the peregrine falcon, the Hedgehog,
the Royal Eagle, the chamois and the wolf.
We have a variety fauna
in Asturias
like: chestnut trees, birch trees,
pines, ash trees, cherry trees, hazel trees and maples trees.
Gastronomy
The most typical
Asturian dish is fabada, a stew made from
dried white beans (fabes), black pudding (morcilla), pork sausage
(chorizo) and pork shoulder. Fabada is also made with clams or other seafood.

PICOS DE EUROPA NATURAL PARK
The Picos de Europa National Park is a National Park in the Picos de
Europa mountain range of 20 km, in northern Spain . It is shared by the autonomous
communities of Asturias , Cantabria and Castile and León
It was the first of the National Parks of Spain along
with Ordesa y Monte
Perdido National Parki in the Pyrenees . It was created 22 July 1918.
The total area of the
park is 646.60 km². The highest point of the park is in Torre de Cerredo peak, 2,648 m
There are many
protected animal species, like the Capercaillie, the Lammergeier, the
Cantabrian brown bear and the Iberian Wolf .The most representative animal of
the Picos de Europa is the Pyrenean chamois or sarrio, or its more specific
relative, the Cantabrian chamois or rebeco which there are many sculptures
around the park.
